Director, Solution Design – Remote

This is a Full-time position in Phoenix, AZ posted December 13, 2021.

A Director, Solution Design is a key member of the Solution Design Department and serves in the role of Solution Architect on projects.

Solution Design is comprised of director and senior director level Associates, both of which serve in the role of Solution Architect.

As Solution Architect, the Director, Solution Design will lead design work of distribution center operations and material handling systems with Fortna’s Clients in conjunction with Fortna’s Operations Design team.

This Solution Design role is accountable to the quality and feasibility of design, ensuring all operational and business requirements are met or exceeded.

The Director, Solution Design is considered a critical technical role within the organization, and serving in a Solution Architect capacity on projects, is expected to provide coaching and mentoring to the project team whom is being served by the Solution Architect, as well as the Solution Design Department through peer mentoring.

The Director, Solution Design is expected to support multiple projects at a time as Solution Architect, each of varying complexity and effort. 

The Director, Solution Design is expected to have a significant understanding of distribution center operations, material handling technology, and warehouse software system technology.

Team leadership competencies, collaboration abilities, and cross-functional awareness are required attributes of the Director, Solution Design.

Overall, the Director, Solution Design is considered a primary stakeholder in ensuring the successful completion of projects for Fortna and Fortna’s Clients, as well as ensuring the continuous growth, innovation, and development of the department in support of Fortna’s growth and superiority in the marketplace.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Facilitating and leading Solution Design Workshops for Fortna teams and supporting the presentation of developed concepts to Clients.

    Leading solution refinement efforts and participating in the communication and presentation of solution refinements to Clients.

    This encompasses, but is not limited to:

  • Gaining an understanding of Client’s business needs and operational requirements;
  • Developing a Concept Hypothesis;
  • Refining the design to validate, or invalidate the hypothesis;
  • Overseeing solution development with the project Application Engineer;
  • Arriving at a solution that meets all business and operational requirements;
  • Getting internal and external stakeholders “buy in,” and;
  • Capital budget estimation of solution.
  • Understanding the roles and responsibilities of all team members associated with an Operations Design effort, and being able to leverage the talents and contributions of each team member effectively, commensurate to their role expectations and individual abilities.
  • Developing a wide array of conceptual designs to meet various Client requirements, business and operational requirements.

    Concepts may range from manual to fully automated solutions.

  • Facilitating design review meetings internally and externally for projects associated with; active participating in peer reviews for all projects in the Department.
  • Serving as the lead on select Operation Design efforts interfacing directly with the Client, as required.
  • Sales and Client support at all Client interfacing levels, including Executive and Board of Directors, on our design methodology and the application of technology to solve business problems.
  • Assisting and leading of supplier training programs and supplier relationships as required.
  • Continually self-educating and evaluating current and future technology and operating methodologies for possible inclusion in current and future Concept Designs.
  • Participating in tools development, continuous improvement and use, such as FortnaDCmodeler® and FortnaDCoptimizers™.

CONTINUING EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Improving mathematical modeling skills and experiences. 
  • Attending tradeshows personally as required.
  • Determining and establishing supplier training and technology awareness hosted events as required.
  • Evaluating new technologies and companies in the Material Handling and related industries.
  • Evaluating potential new Suppliers and lead technical qualification of Supplier.
  • Staying abreast of material handling offerings, application of technology, and operational processes.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working with Sales and Operations Design leads to develop, and in some cases lead the development effort, for Statements of Work and Workplans for Operation Design efforts.
  • Leading special projects from time to time, internal or external. 
  • Leading and supporting pricing efforts through the design process.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert.
  • Contributing to supplier request for proposal development.
  • Collaborating on white papers, articles, and other forms of media on industry related topics to support Fortna and personal branding; participating in trade shows, lead seminars, give speeches, roundtables and other presentations, as required.
  • Collaborating on the development and delivery of training for Associate development within Solution Design or Operations Design.

Experience and Skills:

  • 4-year engineering degree from an accredited college with 5 years at senior position or;
  • Masters degree and 5 years relevant experience or;
  • 7+ years at senior level.
  • Proven track record of designing successful operations implementations
  • Proven leadership skills with leadership experience, strong business acumen
  • Experience in meeting and design session leadership
  • Experience with conveyor and sortation material handling equipment design and applications
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management and problem solving skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Team oriented
  • Adept at being resourceful
  • Adept at learning very quickly
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, Word and Visio
  • Ability to travel approximately 50% (domestic and internationally)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree and/or PE license
  • 7 years consulting, operations and/or distribution experience in supply chain logistics
  • 15+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience running or leading a fulfillment operation
  • Project management experience
  • Entrepreneurial experience
